The small details in motorcycle tuning ask - how to choose and modify the saddle of a motorcycle
Release time:2024-03-07
Compared to other performance packages such as suspension, damping and brakes, many tuners rarely put too much thought into the seemingly insignificant part of the saddle. Generally, as long as you think the style is beautiful enough, but in fact, the seemingly insignificant chair is also very knowledgeable. If you've ridden more than 100 kilometers in a row, you know this well.
Generally, a motorcycle seat consists of three parts: the base, the plastic padding material, and the covering (of course, there are some seats with less or more than three parts). Usually when you go to modify the seat, there are no more than three options: a. replace the seat entirely. b. Replace only the covering of the seat. c. Replace the covering and filling. Depending on your needs, you can choose any of them. However, in most cases, if you have made a major modification to the car, the original seat will basically need to be completely replaced for the overall coordination (of course, you can also choose to find a professional modifier to upgrade and modify the original seat). In a way, this is almost the equivalent of a complete replacement. )
Modifying a motorcycle seat may seem like a minor problem, but it's actually a lot of knowledge. It's a good idea to have a simple understanding of the saddle before you get started.
base
Normally, the base of most of the original seats and a few modified seats is made of plastic, and it is clear that most of these materials are due to cost considerations, and their quality can be imagined. When choosing a seat, it is generally necessary to touch the material surface of the base, weigh the weight of the seat, and knock to listen to the sound. After these steps, you can basically roughly determine the type of material that makes up the base. Specially modified seats and seats for high-end cars will be made of fiberglass, carbon fiber or metal. This base has better strength and rigidity.
Also remember to carefully observe the details of the workmanship of the base: whether the surface is rough, whether there are burrs, etc. Rough edges are prone to cutting through the covered material after a period of use. Of course, price is also a good factor to consider when buying. Cheap is not good, this is the iron law!
The rubber cushion under the seat cushion base is also a detail that should not be overlooked, a good cushion can effectively cushion vibration, and it is not easy to age over time, but this is not easy to identify by the naked eye, you need to check the product description or consult the store. In addition, to see if the seat cover and the base are tightly combined, some saddles simply nail the covering leather and the base together, and do not fit tightly, which has a great impact on the service life.
filler
The decision to make a seat comfortable depends largely on the padding inside the seat. Typically, these filled materials serve both shaping and cushioning purposes. The seat is definitely not a good choice, after all, long-term riding depends more on the comfort of the seat.
Don't underestimate the padding, a good saddle shaping will make your sitting position easier, so that your back will be much less stressed, and long rides will not cause back pain. Normally, for the convenience of manufacturing, the manufacturer shares a padding for the area where the rider and passenger sit (and a small number of saddles are separated independently, so that the saddle can be retained independently of any part, which is easy to modify). Although some of the seats appear to separate the two areas, they are actually connected underneath, which adds a certain cost to the modification, and if you want to replace them, you have to replace them all.
Better saddle padding will be made of a material like polyurethane foam, rather than the usual sponge or other common plastic foam that we see. The manufacturing process of polyurethane foam is not popular, and many manufacturers have their own unique formulas, so that the same raw materials can create finished saddles with very different properties. Good soft and hard are moderate and can withstand the test of tens of thousands of kilometers. A saddle that is too soft is actually not comfortable and completely unsupportive. And a saddle that's too stiff will make you feel like you're sitting directly on the board.
When choosing the interior padding, the best thing to do is to press the saddle with your hands, a good padding will only be pressed down by a third at most, and there will be no feeling of bottoming out. It's also a good idea to sit down and trust that your ass has the most say in what choices you choose. A good saddle padding will "adjust" to your hip shape after you sit down for up to 15 minutes, and this deformation is not permanent, it will return to its original shape when the pressure is removed. The kind of saddle that is hard and does not deform or is pressed down, like an inferior sofa, will be permanently deformed over time, is definitely not a good choice.
